With a HERO8, as with previous GoPro action cams, GPS and other metadata are recorded with the movie you shoot and embedded in the resulting MP4 files. A few years ago, GoPro added the ability to add this telemetric data to its editing app in the form of gauges that you can choose to show as overlays on the resulting movie, but you can’t extract the metadata and use it as you wish from within their app. Unless you buy software like GoPro Telemetry Extractor Premium, which allows you to do pretty much anything you want with a HERO’s metadata.
Universe, Red Giant Software’s subscription-based plug-in for Adobe After Effects and seven other NLEs and compositing apps, has been updated to version 3.1 and incorporates some interesting new modules.
Ripple Tools Complete for Final Cut Pro X promises to give you a full set of effects, most of them based on the title concept of FCP X of which many are trackable. Many effects that you can buy in one plug-in are either so simple you can create them faster using Final Cut Pro X’s built-in tools or so cheesy it hurts your eyes. I’m happy to say neither is the case with Ripple Tools Complete.
I remember buying my first and last Power Mac Pro many years ago. It looked gorgeous, it was blazingly fast and I used it for about eight years. Keep in mind that last figure as I take you on a city trip to the price level of the new Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR.
The people of Hedge, the (mainly video) offloading slash backup app, have acquired Postlab. This will allow them to deliver an efficient and vendor neutral workflow solution very soon.
Since the Omni Group released OmniFocus many years ago, it’s been the most powerful task manager available on the macOS platform. It also used to be fairly complicated. After having read the OmniFocus 3 web page, I decided to give OmniFocus 3 for macOS a try and see how a photographer or video creator could benefit from it.
There are five new text effects and a brand new dashboard in Universe 3.0. I tried the new version with Final Cut Pro X and Motion, and while the dashboard still needs some tweaking, the new text effects were brilliant for enhancing sci-fi and thriller movies.
You can create a mood for a movie with background music, by creatively framing, but first and foremost by using lighting. A scene lit with a greenish tinted light comes across very differently from that same scene lit with a reddish tinted filter.
Camera framing is important. Framing can be used as a powerful means to an end in creating trustworthy or fake news. Not seldom is there a discrepancy between what you think is worth framing for maximum effect and what really counts.
Skylum has just released a Library-equipped version of Luminar and updated the version number in one fell swoop. After playing around with a late beta, I think it’s a decent attempt at making a photo management system and the roadmap promises improvements that will answer most of the professional photographer’s needs.
