An outliner, who needs them these days with iOS apps that let you write anything from free text to outlines with a stylus? Well, if you’re someone who likes to get some order in the chaos of his mind, there’s more to outlining than adding words with a checkbox in front of, or indenting lines of text. In fact, if you’ve tried OmniOutliner Pro you’ll realise it can help you organise even relatively complex projects.
The GoPro HERO5 is a lovely action camera with its built-in electronic stabilisation, but if you think it’s going to make your footage perfectly smooth, you’re in for a disappointment. No digital stabiliser currently available can make footage look good when the operator has been subjecting the camera to shocks from walking, running or whatever. A real stabiliser is a must-have for those occasions where you can’t keep the camera still. The Karma Grip has been specially designed to stabilise the HERO5.
iZotope’s RX audio editor was upgraded and released last week. It repairs, restores and enhances audio and is frequently used to fix sub-par audio in post-production. With nine new features included, version 6 is the biggest RX upgrade ever.
Palette, a smal Australian company of enthusiasts, develops the Cube Portable Color Digitizer, a small, white cube-shaped scanner that stores up to 20 colours in its internal memory and helps designers and artists find matching colours. A smartphone/tablet app and/or macOS/Windows desktop app complete the offering.
I’m not a fan of automatic image enhancement tools, but Perfectly Clear 3 struck me as a Photoshop plug-in that allows for subtle improvements on portraits without making you look like a plastic Barbie doll. It offers a plethora of presets and a full set of controls too.
Noise is a problem, especially with small-sensor cameras. FxFactory has a new noise reduction plug-in for Final Cut Pro X and Premiere Pro from Crumplepop. It claims to beat noise efficiently, using a simple interface. I compared Crumplepop’s VideoDenoise with Red Giant’s Denoiser III and the older Photon Pro plug-in.
Mac users have always been left in the cold when it comes to business software and related hardware drivers. The CUPS offering for Zebra printers, for example, has label sizes that don’t print correctly, is extremely slow and has a low quality that makes barcode printing a trial and error affair. UK-based Peninsula Distribution has been the only company to offer well-designed software for owners of a Datamax, TSC, TEC, Honeywell, Intermec, Dymo, Godex, Brady, Argox, SATO, Monarch or Citizen label or card printer.
PhotoSweeper is a virtual mop for your images. The app lets you get rid of duplicates, but you are in control of what duplicates mean exactly. Version 3 is a free upgrade for licensed users and it comes with a few nifty new features.
